ChatGPT Just Made Unlimited Text Chats Free, Here's What Still Costs You

On August 6, 2026, OpenAI
announced that free ChatGPT users can now enjoy unlimited text conversations with the chatbot.
The rollout lands this week.
Luna becomes the Free and Go default during the week of the announcement, with unlimited text chats and the Think button following in the week of August 10, 2026.
That old 10-messages-per-5-hours wall that made you wait around mid-project? Gone, if you're on Free or the $8/month Go plan.

## What Actually Changed

Two things happened at once. First, the model swap:
OpenAI made GPT‑5.6 Luna the default model for Free and Go ChatGPT users, giving them access to a newer, more capable model to replace GPT‑5.5 Instant.
Second, the cap removal:
the company is letting Free and Go users access unlimited text chats, with no text-based rate limits.

Free users also get a new tool for harder questions.
Free users get a Think button, which gives GPT-5.6 Luna more time to work through harder questions on a per-message basis.
That's a scaled-down version of what paid users get —
Plus and Pro users get a slider in ChatGPT on web, mobile, and desktop that sets how much thought the model puts into an answer, from quick everyday replies up to extended effort for planning, research, writing, coding, and decisions.

Why now?
With ChatGPT now at 1 billion weekly users, the move is a direct push to hold that audience against Claude and Gemini, both of which already offer unlimited free text.
This isn't generosity. It's a competitive response.

## The Limits That Didn't Move

"Unlimited" means unlimited text. Everything else still has a ceiling.
Free users keep hitting limits on file uploads and PDF analysis, image generation via DALL-E 3, and custom GPT agents.
If your workflow leans on uploading PDFs for summary, or generating images inside a chat, you'll still hit a wall — you just won't hit it while typing.

The reasoning tool is also gated.
The Think button — a step-by-step reasoning mode — is reserved for Plus and Pro subscribers.
Wait — that contradicts the Free "Think button" reporting above from TechCrunch and Unite.AI, which say Free gets a Think button too. I'm flagging that discrepancy rather than picking a side: some outlets report Free/Go get their own Think button, one report says Think is Plus/Pro only. ## The Accuracy Claim, With a Grain of Salt

OpenAI is marketing Luna on factual reliability.
OpenAI claims Luna produces 62–68% fewer factual errors than GPT-5.5, but that figure comes from internal evaluation with no published methodology or third-party validation, per SQ Magazine analysis.
No third party has run that test.
Take the accuracy pitch with some caution. For everyday questions, quick drafts, and coding help, Luna is capable; for high-stakes factual research, the limitations matter.

## Your Data Is Still the Price of Admission

Nothing changed on training defaults.
Free chats feed OpenAI's training data by default. If you'd rather your conversations not contribute to future model versions, you need to opt out manually: go to Settings → Data Controls → toggle off "Improve the model for everyone."
That switch isn't easy to find —
the option exists, but it's not surfaced prominently.
Free users in the US are also still seeing ads, a change that

## Who Should Skip Paying Now

If you're a Free or Go user who was hitting the old cap mid-conversation, this update solves your actual problem — you get more volume, a newer default model, and a basic reasoning toggle, all at $0. If your bottleneck was uploading files, generating images, or running custom GPTs, unlimited text doesn't touch that. Don't upgrade to Plus for message volume alone anymore. That argument just got weaker.

Open ChatGPT, check your model picker. If it says GPT-5.6 Luna, you're on the new default. Go to Settings → Data Controls and decide for yourself whether "Improve the model for everyone" stays on. Then run your normal workload for a week before deciding if Plus's file, image, and reasoning features are worth $20/month to you — not because of message caps, because those are gone.
